Newspaper Collection

American newspapers date back to the earliest days of the colonies, and it only a fairly recent phenomenon that newspapers have grown to cover national and international news. For most of American history, newspapers were hyper local, and for the modern researcher old newspapers can be an invaluable primary source for those seeking a glimpse into the every day of past lives or the local twist on a national story. In Taunton alone, there were 35 different newspapers published throughout the 19th century.

The Hurley Library at the OCHM has dozens of titles, ranging from very short term publications to the Taunton Daily Gazette, which has been publishing since 1848. Most of our newspaper resources are on microfilm, allowing for their continued use and preservation. A few exist in their original form and others still are bound in oversized volumes. Overall, the collection tends to be quite sporadic as the dates which have been added to the collection over the years.
